Dear Nathan,
Happy 3-month birthday! Oh
man, what a busy month it has been.
You officially doubled your
weight at 10 weeks 2 days – you got weighed in at 12lb 10oz, and you’re 22.5
inches tall (for the record, most babies double in weight between four and six
months). What a perfectly chubby little boy you are. You moved up to size 2
diapers but now it’s getting tight and there’s a giant box of size 3s waiting
in your closet.
You had your first set of
vaccinations. Boy were there a lot of tears. And the screaming, oh God the
screaming. To be fair, you were perfectly well behaved when we got to your
doctor’s appointment and had to wait 45 minutes (since Dr H was covering for a
colleague who got called into the hospital to deliver a baby), and you were
angelic during your actual appointment. Plus, you waited patiently during my appointment with Dr H. But then your
patience ran out and you got hungry. So you started crying, and then wailing.
This was before your vaccinations
even started. The first vaccination was an oral one, and you were so mad that Nurse
Susan was putting something in your mouth that was not milk. Then came the two
injections (one in each thigh). I’ve never heard you scream so much before, and
nursing you wouldn’t calm you down much either. It was a harrowing experience for
both of us. And oh great, we get to do it all over again at your four-month
appointment.
We moved into our new home.
It was tough trying to be organized enough to pack everything, but luckily your
Poh-Poh and Yee-Yee helped a lot. Your dad spent a week going to the house to
paint all the walls, with Poh-Poh’s help. That meant that we got to move into a
fresh new place with a nice big yard. I was nervous that moving with a newborn
would be hard, so we hired some professional movers, based on Uncle Stan’s
recommendation. It was the best $220 we have ever spent. I got a bit
sentimental when we left the condo where we first brought you home from the
hospital. But then I got excited thinking of all the memories we’ll make at
this new house. This is where you’ll first sit up, have a taste of real food,
and take your first steps. Maybe you’ll even have your first apple-picking
experience in our backyard, which has two apple trees. It feels so nice to be
able to stretch out in our new house. Your dad is loving the yard maintenance
already and was excited to try his manual Fiskars mower. It’s wonderful to be
closer to family too. We are only a one-minute walk away from your Great-Uncle
Larry and Great-Aunt Elaine’s house where you like to visit and stare at their saltwater
aquarium, and about a 15-minute walk from your Great-Grandma (Ah Tai). Plus,
now we have the space to have people over. Aunt Melissa, Uncle Mark, Cole,
Amelia, Nana Maggie, Ah Ma and Uncle Stan all came over for a lunch visit.
You’re so lucky to have so many people who love you and want to visit, hold you
and breathe in your sweet baby scent.
Our last morning in our condo
Your great-grandparents came to visit and pick some apples from our yard, then brought over fresh apple pie! Yum!
You gave me your first smile
on August 27th! You had been flirting with it for a few days, but
then you looked right at me and gave me a big grin and started cooing. My heart
might have melted into a puddle, just a bit. Since then you’re super smiley in
the mornings, though evenings are another story. I have a bit of an
embarrassing story to tell you (don’t worry – it only embarrasses me, not you).
You gave your first super big grin on the night we moved into the house, during
a 3am nursing session. But it felt creepy because you looked up at the ceiling
over my shoulder, gave a great big grin and cooed at something you saw over my shoulder. Then you did it again the
next night at 3am. I became semi-convinced there was a ghost in our new house,
haha.
The first smile I was able to capture on camera. You have a knack for furrowing your brow as soon as you see the camera.
You like to be held upright
now, since you’re so interested in looking at everything around you. You’ve
discovered your fist and like to shove it in your mouth whenever you can.
Sometimes it causes you to gag and throw up all over both of us. Oh well,
you’ll learn. Your legs are getting strong too, and you like to extend them and
“stand” while I hold you upright. You tried sitting in your Bumbo but your neck
strength isn’t all there yet, though it’s much stronger than just a few short
weeks ago.
You like your vibrating
bouncy chair now, after hating it the first two months. Thank goodness you like
it (usually) now, since that means I can take a shower while you vibrate gently
on the floor, and occasionally your dad and I can sit down to eat dinner at the same time. Yay for small
victories!
You’re so much more
conscious and aware of things around you now. It’s neat to see you track and
follow people and objects. I can’t wait to see what next month brings us, although
I am loving this sweet cuddly phase you’re in right now too.
Love always,
Mumma
