Letters to Nathan: Five Months

Dear Nathan,

Happy five-month birthday!

It’s been a difficult month - full of sleepless nights and cranky days. There have been lots of tears, from both of us. I’m exhausted. But it’s funny because I feel like I love you so much more than ever. When I look down at your (finally sleeping) face, I really have to resist the urge to sneak a big kiss on your cheek. I guess that sometimes when you struggle and go through hard times together, all that work just makes us more connected. Boy am I ready for your sleep to get back on track, though.

Trimming your claws
You discovered your exersaucer, often referred to as the “circle of neglect” by many parents. Indeed, it’s nice to be able to put you in it and let you entertain yourself for ten minutes.

This month you really started to love peek-a-boo. You get surprised and delighted each time, even if we do it a dozen times. You also have a newfound fascination with hands – both your own and others’.  Sometimes in the early morning we lay in bed together and I dangle my fingers in front of you so you can grab them and entertain yourself for a bit. It buys me another ten minutes before we have to get up for the day. You’ve really improved your hand-eye co-ordination. You can now grab almost anything and shove it in your mouth.

You love music. Sometimes we have an afternoon dance party. I strap you in the Baby Bjorn carrier and we dance around to songs from the Sunshine Indie Pop playlist on Songza (a great iPhone app that Yee-Yee told me about). You love bobbing around and swinging your arms and legs.

Your dad heard a story about a baby who grew up in a condo and got scared of grass. He wanted to make sure you did not become that baby.

"Touch the grass. It's your friend"  Fatherly advice.

Most of the time, you’re a joy to be with. You have moments of such sweetness and curiosity. It’s just that your feelings are so extreme – you’re either very calm and happy, or you’re incredibly upset and inconsolable. But sometimes the traits we find difficult in babies (demanding, passionate, headstrong) are also the ones we admire in adults for their leadership abilities, strength and fortitude. I love the personality you are developing…I just wish that you’d leave that development for daytime and use the night to sleep and refuel.

I super love the picture of Nathan getting his nails trimmed.
And I laughed so hard at Jay making sure Nathan is not afraid of grass. And I too have children with a very wide spectrum of emotions and it can be exhausting but the joy is so joyful it makes up for the rest.... when they start to sleep, that is.
