Letters to Nathan: Two Months

August 2012

Dear Nathan,

Happy 2-month birthday! What a difference a month makes. You’re so much bigger and stronger, it’s hard to believe that two short months ago you were just a scrawny little newborn. Now you’ve got great neck control and are so interested in the world around you. You gaze into the eyes of whoever is holding you, as long as there isn’t a bright light source somewhere. You love looking up at lights and out windows.

Look how tiny you were in your first week!

We had our first overnight visit to Peterborough where you attended two surprise birthday parties, had dinner at Grandpa and Kokum’s, and a lovely brunch visit with Aunt Liz and Sara. You tend to fall asleep in the car, so every time we visit someone you’re asleep. You've fooled everyone into thinking you're a very sleepy baby all the time but your dad and I are onto you.

You’re still a pretty easy going lad, but when you’re hungry – watch out! The wailing starts pretty quickly. At six weeks, you were still nursing every 2.5 to 3 hours at night, but started giving us one longer stretch at eight weeks (closer to 4 to 5 hours sometimes).

You’ve outgrown so many of your clothes. I can’t believe how tall you’ve gotten, and you’ve definitely got chubbier arms and legs. Check out how much bigger than your teddy bear you are now compared to last month.

At the hospital when you were born, your hearing was tested. You didn’t pass that test, which is pretty common, so that meant we had to do a hearing test a few weeks ago. We went to the Ontario Early Years Centre and an audio technician placed electrodes on your forehead and behind each ear. Then she inserted a thin wand into your ear and the electrodes recorded your brain waves to see if you were responding to sound. Your dad and I were pretty sure you could hear, but I was still a bit nervous during the five-minute test. Thankfully, you passed!

You met your cousins Cole and Amelia for the first time. As soon as you get a bit bigger, I bet they’ll be happy to share their toys with you. I know Cole is already looking forward to the day he can play with you. Babies are not really his thing, though.

You also met Aunties Nina and Amanda, along with Amanda’s adorable little boy Ethan at the Old Spaghetti Factory.

You’re a scratch master, as in you keep scratching up your face. Last month, it would leave red streaks across your cheeks and forehead, but this month you’re drawing blood, much to my horror. No matter how often we clip and file your fingernails, you still manage to claw your face with such ferocity that you’ve got some scabs now. You look like a bad-ass baby, possibly like you’ve joined a baby biker gang.

I took this photo during the 5 minutes you tolerated the swing

Every day is getting more enjoyable, as you’re interacting more and more. I can’t wait to see what changes next month brings us.

Love always,
Mumma

Amelia also didn't pass her hearing test. And it was super tough to get her to pass the one later too 'cause she kept screaming and wouldn't be calm for the baseline.

And she was a face scratcher. Remember, Cole would say, "Her was in a bar fight."

And the picture of Jay lying with Nathan. Nathan's wearing what I call the "creel PJ's" 'cause there are fish all over them.

Awesome.
Love your updates.

Ditto for Isaac not passing his hearing test and being a face scratcher. I love Nathan's hair colour! I'm so glad he's starting to do longer stretches at night. Can't wait to see you guys again.
